Strengthening the Capacity of Bar Associations and Lawyers on European Human Rights Standards

Brief Description of the Project and Main Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the effective implementation of European human rights standards in Türkiye, and the specific objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of bar associations and lawyers in Türkiye to implement European human rights standards.

Achieved Results / Expected Outputs

  • Strengthening the institutional capacity of the Human Rights Centers of the bar associations in seven pilot provinces and improving the coordination between the Centers
  • Increasing the capacity of lawyers to implement European human rights standards in their daily work environment
  • Strengthening the cooperation between the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and the Human Rights Centers in Bar Associations
  • With the activities carried out under the project, the capacity of lawyers on human rights standards was improved. In the project, eight HELP courses under the European Programme for Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) were translated into Turkish and more than 4,000 lawyers received human rights training in the project. In order to support the capacity of lawyers, publications on the processes of the European Court of Human Rights were also translated into Turkish and shared with Bar Associations.
  • Human Rights Centers were established in the Bar Associations of seven provinces, and the statutes of these centers were prepared, including the Human Rights Center of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations.
  • Internet-based IHMNET was developed in order to maintain communication and interaction on Human Rights.
