Fundamental Rights Sector stakeholders gathered at the Awareness Raising Seminar on Integration of Fundamental Rights and Gender Equality Perspective to Disaster Management, held on April 29-30, 2024!
On February 6, 2023, the earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye affected a population of 13.5 million across 11 provinces, with the most affected groups being women, children, elderly, and disabled citizens, who make up half of the population. It is crucial to consider the specific needs and rights of these vulnerable groups most affected by all disasters to mitigate the adverse impacts of disasters. In this context, during the extension period of the Strengthening of Fundamental Rights Sector Coordination Project, Disaster Management Responsive to Fundamental Rights and Gender Equality, and Disaster Risk Reduction have been identified as the main themes.
In the seminar held within this context in Ankara, representatives of UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, European Commission Directorate General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies made presentations on International DRR Framework, Sendai Framework, Engaging Stakeholders in DRR Processes, Disaster Resilience Goals and Inclusion Principles and Approaches, Protecting the Rights of Vulnerable Groups-Country Experiences. In addition, a panel on “Understanding Vulnerabilities and Including the Most at Risk, Case of Türkiye” was held at the seminar.
